Gulf Shores High School students will get hands-on, real-life food prep opportunity this year from the Hangout chef, Ira Gallon, this Thanksgiving. Students interested in culinary/hospitality profession will learn to prepare the dressing that will be served at the Hangout’s Thanksgiving Day Buffet. Chef Gallon will visit with the students on Friday, Nov. 21 to explain the recipe and the students will prepare on Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week.
“I feel that helping with events such as the Thanksgiving dinner with The Hangout gives the students experience preparing large quantities of food normally made in a restaurant kitchen here in our own classroom kitchen,” said Hospitality/ Culinary Career Academy teacher Lauri Herndl. “They get to practice recipe reading, listening to instruction, timing, and working in teams. Many students already work in the industry, but many don’t. Experiences with working with The Hangout can help students determine if this is the career path they want to take.”
Herndi, who has approximately 85 students in her class this semester, keeps her students busy with several opportunities all year long. The students have also participated in the recent 7th Annual Oyster Cook-Off earlier this month as well as the Hangout Music Festival in May. Other events include the Monster Mash Halloween Social for senior citizens by the City of Gulf Shores, and baked goods the City’s Halloween family fun cake walk.
“It’s such a privilege and joy to work with the students, and watch them learn and practice their skills,” said Ira Gallon, executive chef for The Hangout. “Outside of turkey, dressing is one of Thanksgiving’s most iconic dishes. We’re not asking them to make a simple sauce, we’re working with them on one of the most important parts of the meal.”
The Hangout’s traditional turkey buffet complete with all the fixin’s will include: roast turkey breast with turkey gravy and cranberry sauce, roasted prime rib with au jus and horseradish cream, cornbread dressing, braised collard greens, sautéed carrots with garlic and shallots, brussels sprouts with smoked bacon and pine nuts, Cajun rice pilaf, mac and cheese, mashed sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, warm dinner rolls, salad, cookies, apple pie with caramel sauce and pecan pie with whipped cream.
The buffet will be served on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (251) 948-3030 ext. 500.
